Art of Tango series
This week, one of my favourite teachers, Hsueh-tze Lee, will be arriving in Singapore to continue her Art of Tango series (March 2007, November 2007, November 2008). This will be her third visit in 2 years as a matter of fact.
Looking at the list of workshop topics is like venturing into a toy store with too many goodies to choose from! In particular I am especially looking forward to the following classes:
- Enticing walks
- The two classes on turns
- Swirls and suspension in vals
- The three classes devoted to different orchestras
Can’t wait till the workshops start. Thankfully this comes immediately after a company event that I am helping to organise is over, so that I can relax completely. 🙂
There will also be two “studio milongas” (to use the local parlance) for the workshop-averse people:
- Saturday 22 Nov, 9pm – 1am JJSalsarengue.
- Saturday 29 Nov, 9pm – 1am Abrazos
Mind vs instinct

During a recent practica, it suddenly occurred to me that, while practicing, I really need to be careful that I don’t over-emphasise the “intellectual” side while practicing techniques at the expense of shutting out my body’s natural instincts.
What do I mean by this?
A visitor’s experience of Tango in Singapore
Having lived in different cities and also the chance to dance Tango in a few countries, I can certainly relate to the nerves and the insecurities that a new-comer to the scene can experience. Having said that, I was rather surprised and somewhat disappointed to see a “C-” assessment by Dorcinda on her review of Tango in Singapore, albeit from over a year ago.
In particular she cited the following “pet peeves”:
- Unfriendly or “anti-outsider” community.
- Not inviting ladies properly.
- Not finishing the tandas
- Criticizing your dance partner during the dance.
- “A guy who repeats the same move three or more times, cuz the girl didn’t do it right the first time.”
Survival guide for BA
Given the increasing number of Singaporeans who finally managed to make the trip to Buenos Aires (although I still have not made the list yet… 🙁 ) – counting 6-7 in this month alone and perhaps another 6-8 in early 2009 – the following tidbits of information written by a nice English lady who decided to start a new life in BA is highly recommended:
