Memories as a beginner

This video is not strictly speaking related to tango, although funnily enough there is tango 🙂 .

What I liked about this clip, apart from the feel-good storyline, was that it kind of reminded me of the times when I just took up tango. In fact, no matter how long I have been dancing, in some ways I think the days as a beginner are somehow the most memorable – when there were no limits and everything was new and fun!

ps. This short clip is also reminiscent of the (original Japanese-version) of Shall We Dance, which is another movie I enjoyed a lot.

El Tangauta article

In the June issue of El Tangaura – one of the most authoritative magazines detailing tango happenings in Buenos Aires – two of the heavy-weights of tango scene, Julio Balmaceda and Milena Plebs shared some of their their thoughts on tango championships and dancing in general. Apart from being frank on some controversial topics, namely that of holding competitions for tango and the hidden risks of “fashions”, they also reveal certain secrets of their techniques. Very worthwhile read!

Cat magic

The background music of this clip is by Orquesta Típica Fernández Fierro, one of the many modern Tango orchestras in Buenos Aires to consist of only young musicians. Nice sounds, although it seems that their later pieces are tending towards heavy “tangoish” rock music.

Very few, if any, choreographed dances from what I can see. Apart from notable names in their younger days – and some no longer with us – there is a very young Geraldine Rojas dancing with the great Gerardo Portalea as well as none other than Gustavo Naveira! I like especially the more recent clip (2005) with Ruben Harymbat, in his dynamic milonguero style clip danced to the driving rhythms of Biagi; it does not feel dated and rivals, in my opinion, many of the so-called nuevo performances…
